Unique Ways to See The Total Solar Eclipse, From A Basin of Water to A Black Weld Glass
After finishing the Eclipse Prayer (Sholat Gerhana), seconds before sky turned dark, some of the residents has already prepared two basins of water.
SRIPOKU.COM, PALEMBANG -- There are lots of thing that citizens of Palembang did in order to see the Total Solar Eclipse. Some would use the help of a special sunglasses, but there were also some who used a black weld glass and saw the eclipse through a basin of water.
This is exactly what the residents of Kampung Arab Al-Munawar, 13 Ulu Palembang, Wednesday, March 9th, 2016. After finishing the Eclipse Prayer (Sholat Gerhana), seconds before sky turned dark, some of the residents has already prepared two basins of water, which placed at the center of an open fild, as a property to see the eclipse.
Nurul, one of the residents who also prepared the basin, said that she doesn’t have the special glasses to see the eclipse, and prefer to see it using the traditional way.
“There was a myth that if we saw the solar eclipse directly, we will go blind. So there was a tradition that if we want to see it, we must see it through its reflection from a basin or a bucket filled by water,” Nurul said.
Iqbal (8) who felt curious about this tradition, admitted that it is his first time to see the eclipse trough a basin. Iqbal said : “It’s my first time, my mom said that there's gonna be a Tempalo fish in it.”
Since long time ago, there are lots of tradition that citizens would do too see an eclipse. But, feared of becoming blind if saw the eclipse directly, has led to a tradition, which is to see the reflection of the eclipse through a basin of water.
Apart of using a basin of water, some people in Kampung Arab Al-Munawar also used the help of a black weld glass to see the eclipse. (Sadam Husen)
